With the increasing certainty that humans are the cause of global warming, the interest for the climate of the distant past is growing. |
Ein Blick in die Klimageschichte früherer Jahrmillionen |
|
That CO2 has played a crucial role in the history of earth's climate since earliest time, experts today agree largely on. Indeed, they are confronted with the paradox that according to astronomers the strength of the sun increased in the last 4.5 billion years by approximately 40 per cent, without the earth being "boiled" and loosing its water, which would have made the development of life impossible. On the contrary, it appears that the climate has cooled in the longterm albeit more solar energy, and has always been within a range more or less favorable for organisms. Geologists speak of the problem of a "weak early sun"; up to now it can only be solved if one assumes a very high CO2 concentration in the early period earth's evolution. This large greenhouse effect would therefore have ensured that also a weaker radiation would have caused similar temperatures as prevailing today. |
